The Stroke Of A Brush
In
a world where passion meets precision, Colin Henry and his business, The Brush Company, have already made a lasting mark in the painting industry.
Colin’s journey into the world of painting started long before he opened The Brush Company. During high school, Colin often spent his snow days and summer breaks helping his father, Jayson Henry who works for The Well "I really loved it. I loved helping with all sorts of painting projects," Colin recalls. Over time, his passion for painting grew. After a mission trip to Alaska, where he helped paint 16 houses and a barn in just two weeks, Colin realized that painting could become more than just a hobby.
“My dad did the math with me on the plane home from our mission trip to Alaska and said, 'Colin, if you were getting paid for this painting, you’d be doing alright.’” The lightbulb went off, and the rest, as they say, is history. Colin returned home and, with the encouragement of his family, decided to start his own painting business.
Today, The Brush Company offers a wide range of services, including interior and exterior painting, staining, pressure washing, cabinet refinishing, wallpaper removal and installation, and much more. While exterior painting is his favorite part of the job, especially in the warmer months, Colin’s expertise doesn’t stop there. He’s also skilled in handyman tasks that complement painting projects, such as small drywall patch repairs and texture matching for walls and ceilings.
Colin’s attention to detail and commitment to providing clear, upfront quotes have earned him a solid reputation in the Pella area. “I like to go out and give people an accurate quote. I give them a solid quote before the job even begins so they know exactly what they’re paying for,” he explains. This no-surprise approach helps ensure his clients are happy from start to finish.
From residential homes to large commercial projects, The Brush Company works with a diverse clientele. For example, Colin has completed numerous projects for Musco Lighting in Oskaloosa. In addition, he also collaborates with several local contractors to meet the demand for his services.
Currently, Colin handles projects within a rough 30-mile radius of Pella, ranging from small home touch-ups to larger commercial contracts. Despite his success, Colin manages to run his business without a formal team of employees, relying instead on a strong support system from his fiancée, Sophia, and his parents, Jayson and Nancy Henry. Together, they help ensure The Brush Company continues to thrive.

Though Colin doesn’t yet have a commercial shop, he has all the tools needed to complete high-quality work, including a spray booth at his home for cabinet painting. His meticulous process involves removing and sanding cabinet doors offsite before spraying them, while the boxes are sprayed in place in the home.
Looking ahead, Colin sees potential for growth. While he is currently enjoying the hands-on aspects of his business, he hopes to expand in the future by hiring a team to help him meet the increasing demand for his services. But for now, he’s content continuing to refine his craft and serve the greater Pella community.
No job is too big or small for Colin. When asked about the toughest projects, he jokingly mentions that “popcorn ceilings are tricky,” but he adds, “there isn’t a project I can’t take on. If there’s a project someone wants done, I’m going to find a way to get it done for them.” His determination and adaptability have helped him navigate the challenges of running a growing business.
With his skills, passion, and commitment to quality, Colin Henry and The Brush Company are well on their way to becoming a staple in the local business community. As PACE Alliance continues to support young entrepreneurs like Colin, it’s exciting to see how his business will continue to evolve.
At the end of the day, Colin is just happy to be doing what he loves, serving his community, and building a business that has the potential to grow even further. “I’m thrilled with how things are going, and I love being able to continue the trade and service our community,” he says with a smile.
It’s clear that the future is bright for Colin Henry and The Brush Company, and we can’t wait to see where his entrepreneurial journey takes him next.
