While Pella is known for its Dutch heritage, one of the best kept secrets about Pella is the great recreation opportunities available in our community. From Iowa’s largest lake, Lake Red Rock,  to 15 Pella city parks and active city-sponsored rec leagues, residents have lots of opportunities to get moving and have fun!

Recreation Overview

The City of Pella offers its citizens lots of great recreation services for kids and adults alike.  The city manages over 15 different parks that house a variety of facilities, including tennis courts, soccer fields, and baseball diamonds.  Throughout the year, residents of the area can take part in a number of recreation programs from youth and little tyke basketball, flag football, and soccer to adult co-ed softball and sand volleyball.  The City of Pella also runs the year-round-open indoor pool and seasonal outdoor aquatics facility at the Pella Aquatics Center where the public can enjoy lap swim, lessons, water aerobics, and more for a nominal yearly membership fee.

The community features two golf courses, the 9-hole private Pella Golf & Country Club and the 18-hole public Bos Landen Golf Resort, as well as a disc golf course at Roberts Creek.  Residents can get into excellent physical condition using PRC Health & Fitness or Anytime Fitness – Pella’s two great health and fitness facilities.

Lake Red Rock is the perfect place for camping, boating, swimming, bike riding, horseback riding, walking, picnicking, and relaxing on the beach. It is Iowa’s largest man-made lake with anywhere from 15-to-17,000 square acres of surface water and is located just minutes southwest of town.  The Volksweg Trail (“A People’s Path”) runs 14 miles along Lake Red Rock and is ideal for roller blading, biking, walking, jogging and even cross-country skiing during the winter.  The Roberts Creek County Park on the north side of the lake offers hunters the opportunity to encounter one of Iowa’s famed trophy bucks.  Lake Prairie Hunting Preserve just north of Pella has over 1,500 licensed acres of prime hunting ground along with trained hunting dogs, guided turkey hunts, and a clay course.

As you can see, there are recreation opportunities for everyone!
