Art Exhibit - "the well worn path" by Suzanne Faris

From 02/17/2010 - 03/25/2010

Mills Gallery, Lubbers Center for the Visual Arts, Central College, 812 University Street.  8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Artist Suzanne Faris’s work explores the relationship of people to place to object as affected by memory and visual perception.  Her primary area of focus is sculpture and installation art while being experiential in nature.  Her exhibit titled “the well worn path” is site specific, and she will create it especially for the Mills Gallery.  She also will install small, related pieces in various places around campus.  Faris received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and visual communication from Purdue University and a Master’s of Fine Arts in sculpture from the University of Colorado in Boulder.  She is currently an assistant professor of art at Colorado State University.  Faris is this year’s Allison B. Allen guest artist and artist in residence.  The Allison B. Allen visiting artist endowment is in memory of Allison B. Allen, artist and teacher, and funds a visiting artist selected so as to expand the diversity of artistic experience and cultural outlook beyond that offered by the faculty of the art department.  An artist talk and reception will be February 18, in Mills Gallery at 5:30 p.m.  Exhibit & artist talk are both free & open to the public.  For more information, call 628.5334.

Cox-Snow Recital Hall at 11:00 a.m. free and open to the public.
Mary & Dale Andringa will share experiences and insights from their careers as business and social entrepreneurs.  This presentation of the Leadership and Entrepreneurship Program is made possible by Bruce and Sandy Heerema who endowed the Martin Heerema Chair in Business and Entrepreneurship.
Mary serves as president and co-chief executive officer of Vermeer Corporation and Dale is involved in not-for-profit work following his retirement from practicing medicine for nearly 30 years.
Prior to being named president and co-chief executive officer in 2003, Mary was president and chief operating officer with a special focus on manufacturing, continuous improvement and engineering. She joined the family-owned company in 1982 as a marketing researcher. She’s served on several boards, nationally and locally, and is a former trustee of Central College.
Dale retired as chief medical officer at Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield in 2008. He continues working on corporate initiatives as a consultant for Wellmark.
He began his practice in primary care internal medicine in 1979 and was instrumental in merging and growing it into what eventually became Integra Health. As vice president and chief medical officer of Integra Health, he was responsible for quality oversight, physician governance and process improvement initiatives. At the age of 35, Dale became the youngest attending physician to be elected president of the medical staff at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. In 1997, he joined the family business as medical director and director of strategic improvement, managing Vermeer’s 7,000-member self-funded health plan. Jennifer Pozner Presentation

From 03/24/2010 - 03/24/2010

van Emmerik Studio, Maytag Student Center, Central College, 812 University Street.  7:00 p.m.
Jennifer Pozner presents Bachelor Babes, Bridezillas & Husband-Hunting Harems: Unraveling Reality TV’s Twisted Fairy Tales.  Do you ever wonder:  why “reality” TV frames humiliation of women as “ideal fairy tale romance”?; if Prince Charming would really make his “true love” bend over so he could kick her in the butt?; if men should be valued for more than just the size of their…wallets?  Then don't miss this rousing, multi-media presentation!  With humor, razor-sharp analysis and provocative clips from shows like "The Bachelor," "America's Next Top Model," "American Idol," "Extreme Makeover" and "Flavor of Love," media critic Jennifer L. Pozner exposes how “reality” TV reinforces regressive stereotypes about women and men, race and class, and sex, love and marriage in America.  She skewers the lack of ethnic and physical diversity in a genre where women are sold right alongside soda and cell phones, and reveals how reality TV glorifies eating disorders, derides female intelligence, demeans people of color, and reduces Prince Charming to any jerk with a firm butt and a firmer financial portfolio.  Students will never see dating, mating and makeover shows the same way again… and they will laugh—a lot!  Sponsored by the Office of Intercultural Life.  For more information, call 628.5134.
